May 2020: Living Well

Naturally, May is my favorite month because it’s my birthday month. But May is also great because we start to get a preview of summer and there’s something about Memorial Day weekend that is just so special to me. It’s the unofficial kick off to summer.

Because of COVID-19, many of us have been home a lot more. And while becoming around-the-clock homeschoolers, chef, Band-Aid put-onners and project managers has become quite the task there’s something about being home that is fantastic. This is the first time in a long time that I’ve been this still. Sure, traveling, going out with friends and enjoying brunch will be exciting to get back to when the time comes. But living well at home is a skill worth mastering.

Trust me, being home with small children all day every day is no cake walk. But I’ve enjoyed getting to know my kids as people vs. just doing things for them when they come home from school. Finding things to do for them is a task worth committing to and I’ll be sharing ideas of how to keep them occupied and play with them this month.

Living well includes having an intentional work life balance, but I do believe that a lot of the joy in our lives comes from the work that we do. We’ll talk about processes and how to approach work with a willingness to finish strong. I love this mindset because it applies to everything from blogging to having a corporate gig.

Of course when I think about living well, I think about taking care of myself. Eating well is a huge part of it. I’ll be sharing what I eat in a day. I’m not the super healthiest person (eating clean with little ones is tough), but I believe being healthy with a little bit of indulgence makes life worth living. And quick dinners can still be healthy ones – even for the family – and I’ll be sharing some of my go to dinner recipes on the blog this month as well.

We’ll also address the elephant in the room – sleep. From social media to conversations with loved ones, it seems like none of us are sleeping as well as we usually do. A global pandemic looming may be the case. Recently, I’ve made a few changes that have noticeably improved the quality of my sleep that are worth sharing. Plus, the baby has started sleeping 6 or more every night which has a lot to do with it. I’ll be sharing a non sponsored review of the SNOO and if it’s actually worth it for any mamas considering making the purchase themselves.

Relationships absolutely contribute to your quality of life and everyone from my husband to my team members will be chiming in via content in the next few weeks. Hubs knows me like no others and he’s insanely creative. Getting his point of view of life and art is always such a treat. The women I get to work with on a monthly basis are a blessing. You’ll be hearing from them and learning how we work together here on MattieJames.com a little more in the months to come.

Turning 36 is something I’ve been looking forward to. I don’t know – 36 finallys feels like I’m a woman instead of a girl playing woman. I think 10 years of marriage and 3 kids will do that to you. I’ll take some time to reflect on what 35 taught me before turning 36 on the 29th.

May is for getting ready for summer – and for me, getting a year older. But most importantly, May is for living well.

I’m happy to cheers to that.
