If you’re like me, you’ve tried to start a “perfect” routine, only to fall off the minute life didn’t go as planned. For me, that’s nearly every week. Because of the kids, my work and just being a human with a life.
Last year, I thought I had my morning routine perfected: waking up at 5 a.m., reading my devotional, working out, even making breakfast before the kids were up.
For about two weeks, I was unstoppable.
Then one morning, life happened—my son Christian couldn’t sleep, I slept in, and just like that, my routine was gone. I never went back because I was guilty that I missed a day. One missed day turned into a week, and I completely quit.
If you can relate, today’s episode of the Everyday MAGIC Podcast is for you. The truth? You don’t need another routine—you need rhythms that flow with your life.
Why Routines Fail
Routines are fixed. They’re designed for perfection, and they leave little room for flexibility. For multifaceted women—moms, creators, entrepreneurs—life is unpredictable.
Trying to stick to a rigid routine can leave you feeling like a failure whenever you miss a step.
For me, routines always felt like “performance.” I’d follow a Pinterest-inspired schedule or try a TikTok routine, but if life got in the way, I’d beat myself up or declare tomorrow would be different—only to repeat the cycle.
The problem isn’t you; it’s the system. Routines aim for perfect results, but rhythms aim for predictable results. That slight shift in thinking changed everything for me.
How to Build Rhythms That Stick
Rhythms give you structure without rigidity. They honor your time, energy, and focus while allowing the flexibility your real life requires. Here’s a quick breakdown of the three types of rhythms I use:
- Time Rhythms: Create ideal, intentional, and incremental rhythms based on the time you actually have. For example, your ideal morning might be 60 minutes for prayer, reading, and a workout, while your incremental rhythm could be a 10-minute stretch or a quick devotional.
- Energy Rhythms: Honor your natural energy cycles. High-energy days are for deep work or heavy workouts. Medium-energy days are for errands, light content creation, or admin tasks. Low-energy days are for rest, light reading, or gentle movement.
- Focus Rhythms: Build your schedule around your top priorities. Your rhythm adapts to what truly matters, not your fleeting feelings or the pressure to perform.
You can also layer environment rhythms into your day—like soft music during family time, low lights for bedtime, or a candle to signal personal self-care—to create flow and peace.
Your Quick Win
To make this actionable, I created the MAGIC Rhythm Builder Worksheet. It’s a done-for-you tool that helps you map out your ideal, intentional, and incremental rhythms for time, energy, and focus. By the end of today, you can have a rhythm designed specifically for your life—without guilt, frustration, or overwhelm.
