July Q&A

It’s the first Monday of the month which means it’s time for July Q&A! If you’ve been following me for a while, you know I love Q&A (which is why we always have one at the end of my weekly Instagram Lives) and I have a monthly one here on the blog. This month you guys had a few questions about what I was wearing, what’s going on here at the house and a handful of influencer questions.

Do you have someone taking your photos?

Yes, Erica Simmons takes most of my photos for my blog and Instagram. We’ve been working together for the last 2 years (but we’ve been friends for over 12 years!)

What made you decide to share your kiddos? How do you protect their privacy online?

Being a positive public display of the Black millennial family is a priority of my brand. There’s never been a time when I didn’t plan on sharing my family in my content. Hubs and I have had very intentional conversations about our boundaries (none of their kids have their own social media accounts) and what we wanted to keep behind closed doors. Our kids are all full of personality and typically light up in front of the camera, so until they are against that and it’s a natural fit, we will continue to share them in content.

I’ve had a couple of instances where people have stolen Maizah’s photos a few years ago when I had less followers, but it really hasn’t been an issue for me for years. To rectify, I reported the account and had my followers report them as well. Unfortunately, that’s part of it.

Do you do your daughters’ hair daily?

No. That’s just way too much commitment. Ha! We try our best to do their hair 2-3 times a week and wash it weekly/bi-weekly depending on the condition of their hair and what they’ve done throughout the week. The weekdays are pretty busy for us, so we typically like to wash on the weekends and do their hair Sunday nights, Wednesdays and again on Friday if need be. Chris does their hair most of the time – he’s just noticeably better at it than I am.

How do you and Maya Elious know each other?

I’m her older sister. We discuss this in our most recent IG Live.

Where did you get your pink top?

I got it from ZARA (sold out). Here’s a one sleeve similar option as well.

Where are your jeans from?

These are currently my faves. I got them from Shopbop. Here’s a great medium wash option as well.

Details on your dress please?

It’s from H&M but currently sold out. I scoured the internet for something reasonably priced and similar but no avail.

What are some toddler and baby items you’re loving?

Because Christian is 7 months old now and currently getting better at sitting on his own we really love his Bumbo. But before then, this was my go to. It’s just so easy to deal with. This activity center also keeps him busy while I tackle cooking or washing the dishes.

What app do you use to make your to do list in Stories?

Mojo app.

How often should you post per day and blog per month?

This really depends on what your specific goals are. But if you’re looking to have a blog and Instagram that brands pay you for, I believe you should be posting on your Instagram in feed at least 1-2x everyday and 2-3 times on your blog.

Can we get a house tour?

I’m not sure if I’ll do one huge house tour, but we’re working on room reveals to happen during the end of August and throughout the fall. I gave an update on my dining room so far a couple months ago. October makes it one year that we’ve been in this space and I wanted to take my time making it special for the family and create partnerships that naturally flowed with my story and aesthetic. Long story short, room reveals are coming. Stay tuned!

Do you have a maid? Do you have a nanny?

In a word, no. In a COVID world, Hubs and I don’t feel comfortable finding someone to do either of those jobs right now. If the house looks clean and the kids are having a good day, me and Chris are having a good day as well. LOL.

What is the best way to grow as a new influencer? Should I get a press kit now?

Just start and get better as you go along. There are SO many resources available – free and paid – to show you the various ways to do it. Even in the beginning, being consistent is HUGE and will contribute to your growth. So many people are so focused on being perfect instead of being consistent while being GOOD and that holds them back the most.

You don’t necessarily need a press kit in the beginning. I suggest growing your following and getting good at creating and posting content first. Once you hit 1000 followers and your content is at a place where you feel confident enough to present yourself to brands, then you can create a press kit which I discuss here.

That does it for July Q&A. I ask you guys to ask me questions every month on Instagram and I answer them in a monthly post like this. If I didn’t answer your question, it’s likely that I’ve answered it in a previous Q&A, podcast or YouTube video.

Welcome to my blog! Here, I share a glimpse of the products & moments I love for myself, my family, and my home.
