Yes, my morning skincare routine is 7 steps but it’s not as high maintenance as you think. Ok, maybe it is. (Recently, just shared it on Instagram here.)
But even so, it’s absolutely worth it because I have never been more confident about my skin as I am now. It has a lot to do with my current morning skincare routine steps.
For a while, I didn’t know what products to use or what order to use them in. I finally figured it out and found products that make my skin feel best.
YOUR SKIN TYPE DETERMINES WHAT PRODUCTS TO USE
I have normal/oily skin. (If you do not, then some of the products I share may not be best for your skin type.)
Typically, my t-zone gets oily as the day goes on.
I don’t bother from breakouts often, but I do have texture issues with my skin. I aim to use products that smooth my skin out and clear out my pores.
My skin is not overly sensitive, so very seldom is a product too harsh for me.
WHY MORNING SKINCARE IS IMPORTANT
Morning skincare really such a great moment of self-care and discipline. As a mom, it’s one of those moments I don’t have to share with anyone else and it creates space for me to take care of myself.
When I take care of my skin, my skin usually looks good which makes me feel confident. Being confident about how you look and feel is important because it allows you to show up fully in every aspect of your life. That is a big deal.
Plus, skincare is health care. Prioritzing your health is a must.
THE ORDER TO APPLY PRODUCTS IN YOUR SKINCARE ROUTINE
The general rule for how to apply your skincare products is to apply the lightest to heaviest texture.
Your only exceptions are your cleanser and eye cream which should be used first before the rest of your skincare.
For example, toner would be used before moisturizer because toner is liquid while moisturizer is creamy.
THE SEVEN PRODUCTS I USE IN MY MORNING SKINCARE ROUTINE
Cleanser
Eye cream
Toner
Essence
Serum
Moisturizer
SPF
CLEANSER
I use a gel cleanser as it’s very clarifying without stripping my skin and making it feel overly dry.
To ensure I’m getting those pores clean, I always lather the cleanser in wet hands first and wash my face for 60 seconds before rinsing the cleanser off. Cleanser is always the first step in my morning skincare routine.
EYE CREAM
Eye cream is a must. This is the best eye cream I’ve ever used.
Keeping the under eye skin hydrated is important since it’s the thinnest on your face so it shows signs of aging first. Keeping it hydrated prevents dark circles, wrinkles & more. Because the skin is so thin you have to apply product delicately. Always use your ring finger (it has the lightest pressure) to apply eye cream.
TONER
I use this toner right after cleansing on clean, dry skin.
Toner removes any excess product (from your nighttime skincare routine), dirt and oil that may still be in your pores. It basically tones your skin’s cleanliness. I apply toner by swiping it on my skin with a cotton pad.
ESSENCE
I have been using this essence for years and it makes a serious difference in the texture of my skin.
Many people what’s the difference between essence and toner. Toner takes out bad stuff (dirt, oil, impurities) while essence puts good stuff in (hydration).
Toner first, essence next.
SERUM
Since I started using this vitamin C serum in my morning skincare routine, not only is the texture of my skin smoother, but my dark spots have noticeably started fading.
Serum is usually like clear cream or oil that’s highly concentrated with ingredients. I use 4-5 drops and press it into my skin before gentle rubbing it in. (Try to press highly concentrated products into skin first to avoid causing irritation.)
MOISTURIZER
It’s always important to moisturize your skin. Moisturizer is usually creamy in texture and a good moisturizer for your morning skincare routine will hydrate skin without feeling too heavy.
I like to swipe this moisturizer on my face in an upward motion while making sure not to neglect my neck and ears as well.
SPF
While some moisturizers include SPF, I like to include this SPF as its own step.
Black don’t crack but it will burn.
SPF is a must every single season, even when it rains and even when you’re inside because sunlight makes it’s way through clouds and windows.
You want to use an SPF 30 or higher to ensure your skin is protected from both UVA and UVB rays. (UVA causes aging, UVB causes burning) For good measure, I use SPF 50.
Take it seriously and make sure you’re always wearing it to improve the quality of your skin.
If you were looking to refresh your morning skincare routine and the steps in it, I hope this helped. Look at your morning skincare routine as a pocket of self care as you start your day.
