Organizing My Linen Closet

Organizing my linen closet was one of those home projects I’ve been putting off for a while. So when The Container Store sent me some of their products to organize, it lit a fire under me to finally get it done. Organizing your home is a lot of work. This is why people pay for someone else to do it for them. You have to commit at 100% to get it done right and for it to actually stay organized.

My goal for the month of April is to refresh all aspects of my life, my home included. The linen closet was a small but great start.

Before I saw the light, my linen closet was a mess. I started throwing miscellaneous stuff in there when unpacking got overwhelming and I didn’t know where to put stuff. It was all over the place.

Now when I open the door to my linen closet, I feel relaxed and I can everything I need immediately. It feels good.

When you organize your linen closet, you want to take everything out of it – not some, but ALL – so you are clear on all of your inventory. Then you want to edit what you’ll keep, what you’ll get rid of and even what you’ll put somewhere else. There were so many old towels and extra kitchen linens that I didn’t want or need, so tossing it made the process easier. When you organize, the best thing you can do is edit down your inventory to the things you really want. Like Marie Kondo says, keep what brings you joy. If there’s no joy – toss it.

Once you decide on what will be in the linen closet, you have to decide how to categorize it. If you don’t categorize your inventory, it’ll be hard to keep your space organized. Everything must have a place. With my linen closet I decided to make the categories:

  • Kids blankets
  • Beach towels
  • Kitchen linens
  • Pillow cases
  • Bed sheets
  • Makeup towels
  • White hand towels & washcloths
  • Non white hand towels & washcloths
  • White Bath towels
  • White Bath sheets
  • Non white bath towels
  • Blankets

Once this was organized by categories, it made using The Container Store baskets a breeze.

For the kids blankets and beach towels on the bottom, I used the large Nova Woven Baskets. I love that these baskets are soft and so they have a little give if you want to squeeze in one more towel or blanket. I also use the small Nova Woven Baskets throughout the linen closet to organize bed sheets and smaller towels. Up top, I use the large ones again to store non white bath towels and blankets.

I also used the Oslo Bins for my white bath towels and bath sheets. Love these so much that I’m thinking about getting them for other areas in my house. You guys know that bath sheets are massive, but the large Oslo bin fit 6 in there with no problem. I used the small ones for pillow cases. They are great for linen closet organization.

I am absolutely head over heels for my linen closet now that it is organized. It was bad before. But after some editing and categorizing, I finally got it done.
